Overland Track Fees
The Overland Track Fee applies during the peak walking
season, which covers the period 1 November - 30 April each year,
and must be paid at the time of booking. Monies collected from
fees payable to walk the Overland Track are used to assist with
environmental protection and mangement
of the track and associated facilities.
The fee is currently set at $160 AUD per adult, $128 for children
aged 5-17, seniors (65+) and pensioners $128. There is no charge
for children under 5 years of age, however it is not recommended
to take children of this age on the walk to its challenging nature.
National Park Entry
Fees
A Parks Pass is required to enter Tasmania's national parks, which includes the Cradle Mountain
Lake St Clair National Park, where the Overland Track is located.
This fee is payable in addition to the Overland Track Fee which
is payable to walk the Overland Track during hte peak season
01 November - 30 April. Money collected by park entry fees goes
directly towards the maintenance and protection and maintenance
of National Parks in Tasmania.
The Overland Track booking system gives each person walking three options.
If you have already purchased a National Parks pass, it must
be carried with you and shown to the ranger before departing
on the walk.
An 8 week Holiday Pass can be purchased online when you
purchase your Overland Track Pass.
A variety of passes are
available; they can be purchased from a variety of locations
across the state.
What to bring
Tent; huts are located onthe walk however oftenthey are full so it is mandatory that you carry a tent
Fuel stove
Map or GPS
Warm clothing; even during summer months
Sunscreen and a good hat
You are required to carry a trowel, for digging a toilet hole for faecal waste if caught out between toilets.
Toilets are about 4-6 hours walk between huts
You must bury your waste and toilet paper if you do not use a toilet at a campsite.
If you book to walk the Overland Track at short notice, within 2 weeks of doing the walk, you will often find there are a limited choice of departure dates. This is particulary evident during the busy Summer walking season.
Walking the Overland Track in April is also very popular as many walkers come just to see the changing colours of the deciduous beech.
Bookings are required for each
walking season (1 November to 30 April). During the booking
period walkers will be required to walk the track from North
to South (Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair), and pay the Overland
Track Fee.
