As a result of the COVID-19 emergency, the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS) has introduced a  new bushwalker registration and booking systems for popular day and overnight walks, campgrounds and attractions to ensure the community is safe as a result of closures arising from the COVID-19 closures. Pre-registration and bookings are required for ta number of sites listed below to ensure that walker numbers can be capped based on available camping platforms and on current health advice. This will ensure adequate physical distancing and COVID-19 safe practices are followed, even in remote parts of Tasmania in our national parks. Please also note that telephone bookings taken by visitor centres and cave tours will be taken during normal winter operating hours.

Overland Track winter bushwalking, 15 June – 30 September 2020

All huts are closed except for emergency use, with walker numbers capped to 16 people per day. All walkers must carry a good quality 3-4 season tent and complete the Overland Track from north (Cradle Mountain) to south (Lake St Clair) and moving each day.

The registration system is not a safety system; individuals are still responsible for their own safety. The online booking system isn’t live as yet, so in the meantime please call 6165 4254 for bookings.

Frenchmans Cap (Vera and Tahune hut sites), Pine Valley hut site, New Pelion hut via Arm River 

Huts are closed (except for emergency use) at all these locations. All walkers must register and carry a good quality 3-4 season tent.

Frenchmans Cap is limited to a maximum of 8 walkers per day, and walkers must move on to the next campsite each day.

Pine Valley capped at 10 walkers per day

New Pelion capped at eight walkers per day.

Scott Kilvert Memorial Hut/Lake Rodway capped at 12 walkers per day.

To confirm availability and register your tent site call the Lake St Clair Visitor Centre on 03 6289 1172 or email lakestclair@parks.tas.gov.au. Bookings will be made on a first come, first served basis and numbers are strictly limited.

Walls of Jerusalem camping 

Walls of Jerusalem formal campsites at Wild Dog Creek and Dixons Kingdom are capped at 16 walkers per day.  All walkers must carry a good quality 3-4 season tent and move on to the next campsite each day.

Mole Creek Caves 

Bookings for cave tours will be taken just 1 day in advance, by phone, with payment by credit card. There will be six tours per day, with eight places and 2 guides on each tour at Marakoopa Cave.

Hastings Caves tours

Bookings for cave tours will be taken in advance, by phone, with payment by credit card. There will be 4 tours per day, with 8 places on each tour.

Overland Track

Booking for Overland Track departures for the 2020/21 season from 1 October to 31 May open on July 1

Due to the COVID-19 situation and closure of huts with communal sleeping arrangements, the daily walker numbers will be capped at 16 per day to suit available tent sites. bushwalking,
