Description

Lost World Track, kunanyi / Mount Wellington – A Short Adventure to a Hidden Landscape

If you’re looking for one of the most unique bushwalks on kunanyi / Mount Wellington, the Lost World Track is a rewarding adventure that takes you through spectacular alpine scenery, towering dolerite cliffs and a fascinating landscape of giant boulders. Despite being a relatively short walk, it offers an unforgettable experience and some of the most dramatic scenery in Wellington Park.

Overview

  • Location: Wellington Park, Hobart, Tasmania
  • Track Length: Approximately 3.2 km loop
  • Time Required: 1.5–2.5 hours
  • Difficulty: Moderate to hard
  • Track Type: Loop with sections of rock scrambling
  • Suitable for Children: Older children with bushwalking experience
  • Dogs Permitted: No

Where Does the Walk Start?

The Lost World Track begins from The Springs, approximately a 25–30 minute drive from Hobart’s city centre via Pinnacle Road. Parking, picnic facilities and public toilets are available at The Springs, making it an ideal starting point for several of kunanyi’s most popular walks.

The track is well signposted and initially follows a pleasant bush trail before climbing steadily towards the remarkable boulder field known as the “Lost World.”

What to Expect

The highlight of the walk is the incredible maze of massive dolerite boulders beneath the famous Organ Pipes cliffs. The landscape feels almost prehistoric, with enormous rock formations, moss-covered crevices and snow gums creating an otherworldly atmosphere.

Several sections require climbing over and around rocks, making the walk more adventurous than many of the mountain’s other tracks. Once you reach the upper section, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views across Hobart, the Derwent River and the surrounding wilderness.

Because the terrain is uneven, sturdy walking shoes are highly recommended.

How Long Does It Take?

Most walkers complete the Lost World Track in 1½ to 2½ hours, depending on how long they spend exploring the rock formations and enjoying the views. While the distance is relatively short, the rocky terrain means progress is slower than on a typical bush track.

Is It Suitable for Children?

The Lost World Track is not recommended for young children. Although older children who enjoy bushwalking and scrambling over rocks will likely love the adventure, parents should be aware that there are uneven surfaces, steep sections and exposed boulder fields that require careful footing.

Families with younger children may prefer easier walks around The Springs or the Organ Pipes Track.

Are Dogs Allowed?

No. Dogs are not permitted on the Lost World Track or elsewhere within Wellington Park’s protected walking areas. This helps protect the area’s native wildlife and sensitive alpine vegetation. Visitors should leave pets at home when planning this walk.

Best Time to Visit

The Lost World Track can be enjoyed year-round, although conditions on kunanyi can change rapidly. During winter, snow, ice and strong winds are common, while even summer days can become cool and windy at higher elevations.

Always check the weather forecast before setting out and carry warm clothing, drinking water and appropriate footwear.

Facilities

The Springs provides:

  • Car parking
  • Public toilets
  • Picnic tables
  • Information boards
  • Drinking water (seasonal availability)

There are no facilities along the walking track itself.

The Lost World Track offers one of the most memorable short walks on kunanyi / Mount Wellington. Its combination of alpine forest, towering dolerite cliffs and extraordinary boulder fields makes it a favourite for photographers, adventurous walkers and anyone wanting to experience a different side of Tasmania’s iconic mountain.
