Description

The Organ Pipes Track – kunanyi / Mount Wellington, Tasmania

The Organ Pipes Track is one of Tasmania’s most iconic bushwalks, taking visitors beneath the towering dolerite cliffs that have become synonymous with kunanyi / Mount Wellington. Starting from The Springs, this spectacular return walk follows a well-maintained mountain track through alpine forest before traversing beneath the magnificent Organ Pipes—massive Jurassic-era dolerite columns rising up to 120 metres above the track.

Along the way, walkers are rewarded with breathtaking views across Hobart, the River Derwent and southern Tasmania. The combination of dramatic geology, alpine vegetation and panoramic vistas makes this one of the premier walks in Wellington Park. During spring and early summer, colourful native wildflowers brighten the mountainside, while wedge-tailed eagles and peregrine falcons can occasionally be seen soaring above the cliffs.

Although the track is well maintained, there are some sustained uphill sections and uneven rocky surfaces. Walkers should wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for rapidly changing mountain weather, particularly during winter when snow and ice can occur.
