- July 23, 2026
Walk to the summit of kunanyi / Mount Wellington via the Zig Zag Track. Discover track length, walking time, difficulty,…

The Sphinx Rock Bushwalk is one of the most rewarding short walks on kunanyi / Mount Wellington (Wellington Park), offering spectacular views over Hobart, the River Derwent and the impressive Organ Pipes. Starting from The Springs, the walk follows the well-formed Lenah Valley Track through open eucalypt forest before reaching the distinctive sandstone outcrop known as Sphinx Rock. The relatively level trail makes this an excellent choice for visitors looking for a scenic bushwalk without the challenge of climbing to the summit.
The lookout provides panoramic views across southern Tasmania and is particularly beautiful at sunrise or on clear winter days. During late winter and spring, colourful native wildflowers line the track, while native birds are frequently seen among the surrounding bushland. Although the walk itself is straightforward, care should always be taken near the unfenced cliff edge at the lookout.
