St Marys Pass Lookout Walk

A quick, easy forest walk to a coastal lookout just east of St Marys — one of the simplest scenic…

A Steep Climb Straight Up from Town
The Whalers Lookout Walk is one of Bicheno’s best short walks, climbing steeply from near the town centre to a lookout with sweeping views across the township, coastline and Governor Island Marine Reserve. The walk is short enough to fit easily into a visit to Bicheno, but the climb is noticeably steep and gives your legs a quick workout before the reward at the top. The lookout also has a strong connection with Bicheno’s maritime past, recalling the days when whales were watched from the coast during the town’s whaling era. For very little walking distance, Whalers Lookout delivers one of the best panoramas over Bicheno and the surrounding East Coast.
The track begins near Bicheno’s town centre and climbs directly uphill toward the lookout. The route is short but steep, following a formed path with steps and sections of sustained gradient. There is very little flat walking, so most of the effort is concentrated into the climb itself. Once at the top, the terrain levels out around the lookout and opens to broad coastal views across Bicheno and the surrounding East Coast.
Whalers Lookout is a short but steep Grade 3 walk. The distance is modest, but the gradient makes the climb more demanding than its length suggests. Most reasonably fit walkers should manage the ascent comfortably if they take their time. The return is easier but requires care on the steeper steps, particularly if the track is wet.
The main reward is the elevated view across Bicheno township and the surrounding coastline. From the lookout, the town spreads out below, framed by beaches, granite headlands and the waters of the Tasman Sea. It is one of the best places to get an overall sense of Bicheno’s setting on the East Coast.
Just offshore lies Governor Island Marine Reserve, one of Bicheno’s most distinctive natural features. The elevated position makes the island and surrounding coastline much easier to appreciate than from sea level. On a clear day, the views extend well beyond the town to the surrounding East Coast.
The name Whalers Lookout reflects Bicheno’s connection with Tasmania’s nineteenth-century whaling industry. High vantage points along the coast were used to watch for whales passing offshore. Today, the lookout provides a very different experience — a place to appreciate the coastline and, at certain times of year, perhaps even spot whales migrating offshore. The historical connection adds another layer of interest to what would otherwise simply be an excellent scenic lookout.
Late afternoon is a particularly attractive time to visit. Lower-angle light can bring out more detail across the town, coastline and offshore islands. If conditions are clear, the couple of hours before sunset can be excellent for photography.
This is a short walk, but the steep terrain deserves a little care:
Yes, with supervision.
The walk is short enough for most active children, although the steep climb may require a few rest stops. The views from the top provide a clear reward and can make the climb more interesting for younger walkers. Close supervision is recommended near the lookout and on the steeper sections of track.
Whalers Lookout sits within a local scenic reserve rather than a national park. Dogs may be permitted on lead under local reserve rules, but restrictions can change. Check current signage at the trailhead before taking a dog on the walk.
Whalers Lookout is located immediately above Bicheno township on Tasmania’s East Coast. The walk begins from the Foster Street area, only a short distance from the town centre and waterfront. Because the trailhead is close to the centre of Bicheno, many visitors simply walk there from their accommodation or from the main shopping area. The route is signposted and begins climbing almost immediately.
There are no substantial facilities on the track itself, but everything you need is nearby in Bicheno.
Town facilities include:
Its location makes Whalers Lookout one of the easiest walks to add spontaneously while staying in Bicheno.
Whalers Lookout combines perfectly with the Bicheno Blowhole & Foreshore Walk. The Blowhole provides an up-close experience of Bicheno’s granite coastline, while Whalers Lookout gives you the elevated perspective. Together, the two walks cover several of the town’s best-known natural attractions without requiring a full day. Allow a relaxed half-day and add Waubs Beach or lunch in town between the walks.
Whalers Lookout can be walked throughout the year. Clear weather provides the best views, while late afternoon often produces particularly attractive light over the town and coastline. Morning can also be pleasant during warmer weather, before the climb becomes hot. Because the walk is so short, it is easy to wait for a clear patch of weather before heading up.
Whalers Lookout is one of Bicheno’s best examples of maximum scenery for minimum distance. The climb is steep enough to feel satisfying, but short enough that most visitors can fit it into even a busy East Coast itinerary. At the top, you are rewarded with a broad panorama over Bicheno, Governor Island and the surrounding coastline. Add the connection with the town’s whaling history and it becomes more than simply another lookout.
For a quick climb and one of the best views over Bicheno, Whalers Lookout is well worth the effort.
