From the lookout, descend approximately 115 steps to the purpose-built viewing platform beneath the towering sandstone cliffs. From here you can safely admire the remarkable tunnel-shaped sea cave carved by centuries of wave action.
During periods of large ocean swell, waves surge dramatically through the cave, creating one of the most spectacular coastal displays on the Tasman Peninsula.
Although the walk is very short, it is rated Grade 3 because of the long staircase leading down to the viewing platform. Most visitors can comfortably complete the walk, but the return climb may be challenging for those with limited mobility or fitness. The upper lookout is accessible without using the stairs.
The enormous sea cave has been sculpted by the Southern Ocean into a striking tunnel through the sandstone cliffs. Depending on the angle of the light, some visitors notice the cave resembles the outline of Tasmania.
Before descending the steps, enjoy sweeping views across Maingon Bay, Penguin Rocks and the rugged Tasman coastline from the elevated lookout platform.
Towering sandstone cliffs, pounding surf and spectacular ocean views combine to make this one of the most photographed locations on the Tasman Peninsula.
