Walk Highlights

Outstanding Birdlife

The Tamar wetlands support a remarkable diversity of birdlife, including black swans, ducks, herons, cormorants, egrets and numerous migratory shorebirds. The reserve is recognised as one of northern Tasmania’s premier birdwatching locations throughout the year.

Tamar Island

The boardwalk finishes at Tamar Island, where visitors can explore additional short walking paths through peaceful wetland vegetation. The island provides excellent opportunities to appreciate the unique landscape of the Tamar Estuary.

Accessible for Everyone

The continuous boardwalk makes this one of Tasmania’s most accessible bushwalks. Families with prams, wheelchair users and visitors with limited mobility can all enjoy the wetlands without negotiating rough tracks or steep gradients.

Top Tip: Bring a pair of binoculars. The bird hide located partway along the boardwalk offers one of the best opportunities on the Tamar River to observe waterbirds without disturbing them.
