A Hidden Rainforest Waterfall Beyond Russell Falls

Horseshoe Falls is a beautiful, lesser-known waterfall tucked away in the lush rainforest of Mount Field National Park. Located just beyond the famous Russell Falls, this short extension rewards walkers with a peaceful setting and a graceful cascade surrounded by towering tree ferns and ancient moss-covered forest.

Although many visitors turn around after reaching Russell Falls, continuing on to Horseshoe Falls adds only a short distance to the walk and provides a quieter, more intimate rainforest experience. Together, the two waterfalls make one of Tasmania’s finest short walks.

Walk Overview

Location Mount Field National Park, Tasmania
Distance Approximately 2 km return from the Visitor Centre
Time 35–50 minutes
Difficulty Easy – Grade 2
Track Type Return walk or loop via Tall Trees
Track Surface Sealed paths, boardwalks and a short section of steps
Best Time Year-round, with the strongest water flows during winter and spring.

Track Description

The walk begins behind the Mount Field Visitor Centre, following the same sealed path as the popular Russell Falls Walk. After enjoying the views from Russell Falls, continue beyond the main viewing platform along the forest track.

A short climb via several sets of steps leads through magnificent cool temperate rainforest before arriving at Horseshoe Falls. The waterfall tumbles gently over layered rock into a fern-fringed pool, creating a peaceful setting away from the larger crowds.

Walkers can return the same way or continue along the Tall Trees Loop to create a longer rainforest circuit.

Difficulty

The Horseshoe Falls Walk is rated Grade 2 – Easy. While the initial section to Russell Falls is flat and wheelchair accessible, the extension to Horseshoe Falls includes several flights of steps and a gentle climb, making it unsuitable for wheelchairs and more challenging for prams.

Walk Highlights

Horseshoe Falls

The delicate waterfall flows over a broad horseshoe-shaped rock formation into a tranquil rainforest pool. Its quieter location makes it one of Mount Field’s most peaceful waterfalls.

Ancient Rainforest

The track passes through magnificent rainforest filled with towering swamp gums, giant tree ferns, moss-covered logs and lush undergrowth that thrives in Mount Field’s cool, moist climate.

Wildlife and Birdlife

Pademelons, Bennett’s wallabies and colourful native birds are commonly seen throughout the forest. If visiting near dusk, you may even spot glow worms along sections of the track.

Top Tip: Most visitors stop at Russell Falls, so continue the extra few minutes to Horseshoe Falls for a much quieter and equally beautiful rainforest experience.

What to Bring

  • Comfortable walking shoes with good grip
  • A waterproof jacket during cooler months
  • A camera for the rainforest scenery
  • Drinking water
  • A torch if visiting at dusk to look for glow worms

Safety Information

  • The steps and boardwalks may become slippery after rain.
