The Dove Lake Bushwalk Cradle Mountain covers a distance of 6km and is arguably one of Tasmania's favourite and most popular walks. The track takes you completely around Dove Lake beneath the majestic spires of Cradle Mountain. The track is boardwalk for much of the way make it easier for casual walkers, and suitable for walkers of all ages. The walk is located in the Cradle Mountain Lake St Clair National Park. A car park at the Northern end of Dove Lake is provided for people visiting for just the day. The boardwalk weaves a track through the rainforest and past quartzite beaches to the Ballroom forest and then on to the boat shed and back to the car park at the northern end. At the southern end of Dove Lake, you will enter a stunning cool temperate rainforest known as the Ballroom Forest. Here you will find ancient myrtle beech trees covered in moss towering high above a moss-covered forest floor. The effect is beautiful; and reminiscent of an ancient cathedral so make sure you pack a camera. The Overland Track walk takes approximately six days and although the track is well-maintained and clearly marked, for some the journey may not be an easy one. Some people may find the walk quite steep in sections and six days of continuous walking can be physically demanding.

Dove Lake is at the start of the Overland Track when completing the walk from North to South. The Overland Track travels a distance of 65 kilometres through the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. considerable upgrades to the track have made the walk easier, and with modern outdoor equipment, the overall trip is now much more comfortable than in years gone by. However, the walk demands considerable preparation and reasonably good physical fitness given on average it takes five nights and six days to complete the Overland Track bushwalk.
