Blue Tier Giant Walk
- August 4, 2026
A moderate loop through dense myrtle forest to Australia"s widest living tree, the 60m Giant Tree, and the enormous Cradle…

Deep in North East Tasmania near Mathinna, Evercreech Forest Reserve protects the famous White Knights — a group of five exceptionally tall White Gums, also known as Manna Gums. Some rise to more than 90 metres and are believed to be over 300 years old. Recognised as one of Tasmania’s 60 Great Short Walks, this easy forest loop passes beneath the towering trunks before climbing gently to an elevated viewing area.

The walk begins on a broad, mostly level track leading to the base of the giant White Gums. A boardwalk around one of the trees allows visitors to appreciate its scale without damaging the sensitive root system.
From the main viewing area, the track continues as a loop, climbing gently through drier forest before returning to the car park. This section is slightly narrower and less accessible than the opening part of the walk.
Rated Easy, the walk is suitable for most visitors. The first section to the base of the trees is relatively flat and accessible for prams and wheelchairs, while the complete loop includes a gentle climb and narrower track.
Stand beneath five of the tallest known White Gums in the world. Their immense trunks and soaring canopies are best appreciated from directly below, where the true scale of the forest giants becomes clear.
The full loop climbs gently to a higher vantage point, offering a different perspective across the upper trunks and surrounding forest.
Visitors with more time can also explore a separate walk leading towards Evercreech Falls near the headwaters of the South Esk River.
Yes. This is an excellent family walk. The short distance and accessible opening section make it suitable for children and visitors with a wide range of abilities.
Dogs are generally permitted in Evercreech Forest Reserve. Keeping dogs on a lead is recommended to protect native wildlife and avoid disturbing other visitors.
Evercreech Forest Reserve is reached from Fingal by following Mathinna Road and then Evercreech Road. The reserve is around 30 minutes from Fingal, with most of the route on a good road and only a short unsealed section near the end.
For a short and easy forest walk with an extraordinary reward, the White Knights of Evercreech are difficult to beat. The chance to stand beneath some of the tallest trees of their kind anywhere in the world makes this one of North East Tasmania’s most memorable natural attractions.
