Recognised as one of Tasmania’s official 60 Great Short Walks, the Leven Canyon Lookout Walk follows a dramatic loop above the Leven River gorge in north-west Tasmania. Two purpose-built lookout platforms provide sweeping views approximately 275 metres into the canyon, with the imposing summit of Black Bluff visible in the distance on clear days. With almost 700 steps across the full circuit, this walk is more demanding than many short walks in the region, but the views are among the most spectacular in northern Tasmania.

From the car park, the track initially leads towards Cruikshanks Lookout, the easier of the two main viewpoints. The full circuit then continues through forest and around the canyon rim, descending and climbing a long sequence of steps before reaching a second lookout platform. The terrain is well formed, but the number of steps and several steep sections make the loop more strenuous than its short distance might suggest.
The Leven Canyon Lookout Walk is rated Medium to Hard. Reasonable fitness is recommended for the full circuit because of the large number of steps, sustained climbs and exposed sections around the canyon rim. Visitors wanting a shorter and easier option can walk only to Cruikshanks Lookout and return the same way.
The two lookout platforms provide dramatic views into the deep Leven Canyon, carved over time by the Leven River. From the highest viewpoints, the forested gorge drops approximately 275 metres below the track.
On a clear day, the 1,349-metre summit of Black Bluff rises prominently beyond the canyon. The mountain provides a striking backdrop to the rugged forested landscape and is one of the most recognisable features visible from the lookouts.
Cruikshanks Lookout is the easiest viewpoint to reach and provides excellent canyon scenery without requiring visitors to complete the full stepped circuit. It is a good alternative for walkers with limited time or anyone who prefers to avoid the longer climb.
Top Tip: If you are short on time or unsure about tackling the full circuit, walk to Cruikshanks Lookout and return the same way. The shorter option still provides impressive canyon views.
The full circuit is best suited to older children with reasonable fitness. The large number of steps and exposed lookout areas can make the walk challenging for younger children. Prams are not suitable for the track. Families wanting an easier option can visit Cruikshanks Lookout and return without completing the full loop.
Dogs on a lead are generally permitted on the Leven Canyon walking track. Restrictions can change, and separate conditions may apply within the nearby camping area, so visitors should check current signage before starting the walk.
Leven Canyon Regional Reserve is located near Nietta, approximately 42 kilometres inland from Ulverstone. From Ulverstone, follow the signs towards Gunns Plains and Nietta before continuing to Leven Canyon Road and the reserve car park. The drive generally takes around 45 minutes, depending on traffic and road conditions.
Facilities available near the trailhead include:
There are no facilities along the walking track itself, so carry water and anything else required for the circuit.
The Leven Canyon Lookout Walk offers some of the most dramatic elevated views in north-west Tasmania. Its combination of deep gorge scenery, forested slopes, distant mountain views and well-constructed lookout platforms makes it one of the region’s most rewarding short walks. Although the many steps require some effort, the scenery from the canyon rim makes the climb worthwhile.
Important: Weather in the Leven Canyon area can change quickly. Check current conditions, dress warmly and take extra care on steps and exposed lookout sections.
