- August 5, 2026
An easy clifftop walk near Wynyard, linking the Table Cape lookout to the historic 1888 lighthouse - with the Table…

Deep in the lush rainforest near Waratah, the Philosopher Falls Walk follows the Arthur River through beautiful cool temperate forest before descending to one of north-west Tasmania’s most impressive waterfalls. The track winds beneath myrtle trees, ferns and moss-covered forest before a steep staircase of more than 200 steps leads down towards a viewing platform overlooking Philosopher Falls. The climb back up the staircase is the most challenging part of the walk, but the combination of rainforest scenery and the powerful waterfall makes the effort worthwhile.

The walk begins on a relatively gentle track through dense cool temperate rainforest near the Arthur River. Myrtle trees, tree ferns, moss-covered logs and thick undergrowth surround the track, creating the classic damp and atmospheric scenery associated with Tasmania’s north-west forests. Closer to Philosopher Falls, the track reaches a long and steep staircase. More than 200 steps descend through the forest towards the waterfall viewing area, and walkers must climb the same staircase on the return journey.
The Philosopher Falls Walk is rated Medium. Most of the rainforest section is relatively gentle, but the long staircase to the falls adds a considerable physical challenge. Reasonable fitness is recommended, particularly for the return climb from the waterfall.
Philosopher Falls is a broad and impressive cascade surrounded by dense rainforest. Water tumbles across a wide rock face before disappearing into the forest below, creating an especially dramatic sight after periods of heavy rainfall. A purpose-built viewing area provides a good vantage point without the need to leave the formed track.
The journey to the waterfall is almost as rewarding as the destination itself. The track passes through lush forest filled with myrtle, ferns, mosses and fallen logs, creating a cool and sheltered environment throughout much of the walk.
The Arthur River is one of the major waterways of Tasmania’s north-west and forms an important part of the surrounding landscape. Sections of the walk follow close to the river and its tributaries, adding to the peaceful rainforest atmosphere.
Top Tip: Take your time on the return journey. The climb of more than 200 steps from the waterfall is considerably more demanding than the walk down, so allow time for a few rest stops along the way.
The walk is best suited to older children who are comfortable walking on steep stairs and have reasonable fitness. The long staircase makes the track more challenging for very young children, and the walk is not suitable for prams. Children should be closely supervised around stairs, viewing areas and waterways.
No. Dogs are not permitted on the Philosopher Falls walking track.
Visitors should follow all current signs and restrictions at the trailhead.
