Climb to the Summit of Tasmania’s Most Famous Mountain

The Summit via the Zig Zag Track is one of the most iconic bushwalks on kunanyi / Mount Wellington, offering a rewarding climb to the mountain’s 1,271-metre summit. Starting near The Springs, this historic stone-pitched track winds its way up the eastern face of the mountain through alpine vegetation, rocky outcrops and spectacular viewpoints overlooking Hobart, the Derwent Estuary and Storm Bay. What to Expect

Beginning at The Springs, the walk follows the Pinnacle Track before joining the historic Zig Zag Track for the final ascent to the summit. The well-constructed stone pathway steadily climbs through alpine heath and impressive dolerite boulder fields, with numerous opportunities to admire sweeping views across Hobart and southern Tasmania.

As you gain elevation, the scenery becomes increasingly alpine before reaching the summit plateau and the Pinnacle lookout. On a clear day, you’ll enjoy spectacular 360-degree views extending across Bruny Island, the Tasman Peninsula, Mount Field National Park and the rugged mountains of Tasmania’s south-west.

The recently restored Zig Zag Track follows much of the original historic alignment and provides a durable walking surface, although there are still steep sections and many stone steps that require a reasonable level of fitness.

Is the Walk Suitable for Families?

The Summit via the Zig Zag Track is an excellent adventure for active families with older children. While the climb is continuous and can be challenging, children who regularly enjoy bushwalking should find the track manageable. Families should allow plenty of time for rest stops and carry sufficient water, snacks and warm clothing.

Young children and prams are not recommended due to the steep gradients and numerous stone steps.

Can You Take Your Dog?

Dogs are welcome on the Zig Zag Track provided they remain under effective control at all times. Owners should clean up after their pets and be mindful of native wildlife and other walkers. Please note that dogs are prohibited within the fenced summit (Pinnacle) area.
